The Ambassador

After his studies in the classical field, Ambassador Vittorio Sandalli has served the State for more than forty years, enlisting in 1977 as an officer of the Italian Air Force, where he reached the grade of Captain holding several positions both in Rome and abroad.

He joined the Foreign Service in 1990 and after his first assignment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Directorate General for Management and ICT and at the Directorate General for Human Resources he served at the Embassies of Lusaka (Zambia), Ankara (Turkey) and Maputo (Mozambique).

Once he returned to Rome, he was Head of Office III at the Directorate General for Human Resources and was then nominated Consul General in Johannesburg (South Africa) and from 2007 to 2011 Ambassador in Tbilisi (Georgia).

Having returned to Rome once again, he was assigned to the Directorate General for the Country Promotion as Deputy to the Director for the Internationalization of the Country System and Territorial Autonomies.

From 16 November 2015 to 28 June 2020 he served as the Italian Ambassador to Indonesia, accredited also to Timor Leste and to the ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations).

Vittorio Sandalli is Italian Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan since 29 June 2020.
