President Ghani grants Afghan citizenship to Alberto Cairo

Saturday July 20th, during a ceremony at the Presidential palace, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani granted Afghan citizenship to Mr. Alberto Cairo, personally handing to him his Afghan passport.

By means of this ceremony, attended by the Italian Ambassador in Afghanistan Roberto Cantone, the Afghan Government has expressed through its highest authority its appreciation for Mr. Cairo's activity in Afghanistan as Head of the rehabilitation program of the International Red Cross, which spans over 30 years.

Thanks to the work of Mr. Cairo and his colleagues at the Red Cross, since 1990 more than 180.000 Afghan patients have received specialist care after being maimed by the on-going conflict in the Country. Every day the Red Cross program tends to those in need, irrespective of their political or social affiliations, and assists the patients as they struggle to reintegrate into the Afghan social fabric.

Mr. Albert Cairo's work, his generosity and professionalism are a testimony to the importance of humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. The Italian Embassy in Kabul wishes to add its voice to the many who are expressing their appreciation for Mr. Cairo's figure and for his activity.
