Italy allocates 118 milion USD for the electrification of Western Afghanistan

The Italian Government has allocated 118 million USD through the Afghan National Army Trust Fund for the construction of an elecrtic power line in the provinces of Herat and Farah, in Western Afghanistan.

The project, which will be carried out by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will lead to a 220 kV, 311 kilometers long electric power line being laid between Herat and Farah. It will entail the construction of sub-stations, which are crucial for the distribution of power to the end-user, in Farah and Shindand, as well as the renovation of the Herat substation.

By financing this important project, which is part of a wider initiative for the electrification of the Country by ADP and DABS, the Afghan state-controlled energy company, Italy reaffirms its leading role in Western Afghanistan, where the Italian military contingent trains, advises and assists the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF).

Once completed, the power line financed by Italy will bring affordable, sustainable and reliable energy to the local Afghan National Army outposts as well as to 27.000 households in the region, thus contributing substantially to their welfare and livelihoods.
