Visit to Afghanistan of Amb. Francesco Maria Talò, Italian Permanent Representative to NATO (7-9 April 2021)

On 7-9 April, Ambassador Francesco Maria Talò, Italian Permanent Representative to NATO, led a delegation on an official visit to Afghanistan, where he met with top-ranking Afghan officials. The Afghan side expressed its thankfulness for Italy's key contribution for a stable and prosperous Afghanistan, particularly as a Framework Nation of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission. In the year of the centenary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Afghanistan, the Italian delegation reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral ties and the long-term partnership binding Italy and Afghanistan.

In Kabul, the delegation, including the Italian Ambassador to Afghanistan Vittorio Sandalli, Italy's Special Envoy for Afghanistan Gianfranco Petruzzella, the Deputy Commander of the Italian Joint Operational Headquarters Gen. Silvano Frigerio and Adm. Andrea Gueglio, Military Counselor at the Italian Permanent Representation to NATO, met among others with the First Vice President Amrullah Saleh, the Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah, with whom they discussed the recent developments in the Afghan peace process, Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar, National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib, State Minister for Peace Seyed Sayat Naderi and Former President Hamid Karzai. The Italian Embassy in Kabul hosted a meeting with Afghan female Vice Ministers Hosna Jalil, Zakia Adeli, Mujgan Mostafavi, Alema Alame and Atifa Tayeeb, during which the crucial role played by women within the Afghan peace process was highlighted.

The delegation also met with top Italian officials within the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission: Amb. Stefano Pontecorvo, NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, and Gen. Nicola Zanelli, RSM's Deputy Commander. In Herat Amb. Talò met with Gen. Beniamino Vergori, Commander of the "Folgore" Brigade, and the Italian men and women serving at Camp Arena and leading RSM's Western Command in Herat, a region which has been a traditional focus of Italy's commitment in Afghanistan, both in military and development cooperation terms, and called upon Herat Governor Sayed Abdul Wahid Qattali.
