The Italian government reaffirms its support and solidarity with the Afghan population: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, has allocated 2 million euros to UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, to assist returnees and vulnerable communities in Afghanistan.

It is estimated that approximately 2.5 million people have forcibly returned to Afghanistan from neighboring countries since the beginning of the year, and that number could rise to 4.5 million in the coming months, with significant repercussions for host communities already weakened by conflicts, climate change crises, and structural deficiencies in basic need services.

The project “Support for Returnees and Vulnerable Host Communities in Return Areas in Afghanistan” will target over 20,000 beneficiaries, including more than 11,000 women and girls. The initiative aims at promoting social cohesion, strengthening livelihoods, and fostering peaceful coexistence between returnees and host communities.

Italyian actions in Afghanistan are driven by the objective to promote regional stability and socioeconomic development in crisis areas: in this spirit, supporting the most vulnerable segments of the population is essential to contribute to building a better future for all Afghans.
