On Human Rights Day, marking the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th, 1948, we recall Italy’s commitment to defending and promoting human rights and combating all forms of discrimination, in view of the imminent start of its mandate as a voting member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
In line with the guidance of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, our actions are inspired by the protection of the rights of children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, the protection of freedom of expression and worship, the safeguarding of cultural and religious heritage, the promotion of global dialogue, the protection of minorities, and the role of civil society.
We will also continue Italy’s historic diplomatic battle for a universal moratorium on the death penalty, aimed at its complete abolition.
In this spirit, we work to support the Afghan population and Afghanistan’s reintegration into the international community, through active collaboration with multilateral institutions, in contact with civil society, and with leading NGOs committed to protecting human rights.
