THE ITALIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION HAS RENEWED ITS SUPPORT TO MAIA

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) has renewed its support to MAIA, the Italian Archaeological Mission in Afghanistan, founded in 1957 by Giuseppe Tucci. This activity remains a cornerstone of Italy’s cultural diplomacy, having uncovered iconic aspects of the country’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Despite the ongoing challenges on the ground, ISMEO – the International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies – continues its action through remote working and digital training initiatives. These efforts are aimed at the physical conservation of heritage and the promotion of archaeology as a testament to the past and a bridge for the future.

As a symbol of this enduring collaboration, the permanent photographic exhibition dedicated to the MAIA remains open in the Embassy premises, serving as a witness of Italy’s presence and its commitment to safeguarding Afghan cultural heritage.
