Italy continues supporting Afghan people through development cooperation, humanitarian aid, and the promotion of the private sector, with particular attention to women, girls and the most vulnerable groups.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, approved a new contribution of 3.5 million euros to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) aimed at supporting humanitarian assistance for returnees in Afghanistan, in order to provide basic services and healthcare to over 25,000 people and supporting their communities of origin.
Assistance will be granted through IOM’s eight reception and transit centers located along the borders with Iran and Pakistan, as well as in return areas.
In 2024 alone, the IOM recorded over 1.3 million Afghan returnees, with an estimated increase of approximately 2 million people expected to return between 2025 and 2026.
