Humanitarian corridors

In the framework of the “Italian plan for the Afghan population”, on 4th November 2021 Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation signed a Protocol Agreement with the Ministry of Defence, Italian NGOs (S. Egidio, CEI/Caritas, FCEI, Tavola Valdese, ARCI, INMP) and international organisations (UNHCR, IOM) fostering the establishment of “humanitarian corridors” in favor of 1,200 Afghan citizens living in vulnerable conditions in Iran and Pakistan, with particular attention to women and children. On 7th April 2025, an Addendum was signed to establish the extention of the initiative to  another 700 beneficiaries.

In August 2021, as part of the Operation managed by the Ministry of Defense called “Aquila Omnia”, Italy evacuated more than 5,000 people from Afghanistan, including 4,890 Afghan citizens. As part of the operation “Aquila Omnia bis”, which constitutes the continuation of the emergency evacuation from Kabul, a further 3,100 concessions for evacuation to Italy were issued in favor of Afghan citizens who collaborated with the Italian contingent as part of the ISAF mission.
